Default C2 lower ball joints

Is there something I am missing attempting to remove the lower balljoint from the spindle? Upper released easily enough and I now have the lower control arm off the frame and on the bench.

I have tried using the pickle fork I used on the tie rod ends.....nothing yet...I guess 43 years of corrosion will do that!

I want to avoid the "get a bigger hammer" approach for the moment!

Thanks!

I like to use the U-clamp type ball joint remover for this job rather than the pickle fork. Seems to work much easier when combined with an impact gun. Should be able borrow/rent one from Autozone or O'Reileys or buy a cheap one at Harbor Freight.

I recently had the same issue. I went to NAPA, where they loan you a tool (with a very high deposit, which they credit when you return the tool) and used the mammoth clamp type tool. It still took a lot of pressure, but they finally came out. Like you, I was shocked that the pickle fork wouldn't pop it out. I did use a bigger hammer, but even that didn't work. Hopefully you are wearing safety glasses, those little flying slivers can mess up your day.

Yes...last thing I need is an unforseen injurt because I was too lazy to put on a set of safety glasses!! thanks for the suggestion. To be honest I have been plesantly surprised with how easily is has come apart so far. Very few broken/stuck fasteners etc. And even fewer busted knuckles.

Best,

I just did mine last week. I bought a set of pickle forks, but they weren't fat enough. I had to slide a wrench in there as a shim. It took some beating, but finally came apart.

Lower ball joints take a wider pickle fork than the tie rods/idler arm/upper ball joints.

I use a heavy duty air hammer with a pickle fork. I had beat on my lowers til my arms about fell off. Got the air hammer & fork kit, 20 to 30 seconds per side.

Apparently, sometimes, a bigger hammer is exactly what is needed. Will be back at it this weekend and will let you know how it works.

Thanks all for the suggestions.
