Default Pulling steering hub

Back to the well of knowledge -

To those who have done this, is the splined hub pressed on really tight on the splined steering shaft? I'm speaking of the steering wheel hub here. 66 telescopic.

I can assemble my hub etc., but there is an "extra" forward/backward play in the shaft of about 1/4 - 3/8 of an inch. The nut is on tight (there is about 1/4" of tread left as best I can tell). Bnd I don't know if it's supposed to be "pressed on". It's so tight now it would seem to be extremely difficult to do but I'm out of ideas as to why I have this play.

Pulling it out was fairly easy with just a slight hit on the shaft while the nut was still on.

I hope this is a clear enough question if anyone has an idea.

And as usual, I appreciate any input.

Have you followed the upper end assembly/adjustment procedure in section N36 in the Assembly Manual?

Thanks John.

I'm at work so I can't check the manuals I do have but I bought what I thought was an assembly manual. I actually bought 2 because the first copy was pretty bad. However, these manuals show the parts with numbers and diagrams but I don't remember seeing any instructions or procedures.

I'll check this evening but is the manual you are referring to?

Thanks
Joe

when you put it back on the Nut will torque it down...i dont know the pounds to torque it at but someone will chime in...

It sounds like the bearing on the shaft out at the fire wall needs some adjustment...or the ten point bolt is not tight on the rag joint...

The '66 Assembly Manual, section N36, sheet A3 has the detailed procedure for assembly of the upper end of the telescopic column. Should also be a much more detailed item on assembly of the entire column in section 9 (steering) in the '66 Chassis Service Manual.

Thanks JohnZ, found it. Sister Mary Martha always pointed out that I was never to good with books.
