Hi, driving home from a cruise night the other day, I noticed I heard a faint clicking sound ( found out it's coming from the "flasher " under dash related to the directionals) . A fellow Vette owner pulled up next to me at light, said that my rear brake lights where flashing . My 66 Vette does have the under dash flashers( offered by Chevy as a add on option that year) . Never used them in the 18 years owning the car. Anyway, found out they where not trurned on , but brake lights where never less "blinking" on and off!. When I pulled the red switch **** on, binking stopped, but then I found out I had no directionals!
So if flasher switch is off, the brake lights blink, when pulled out to the on posistion, the blinking stops, but no directionals work at all.
Figure I must have a short or pinched wire!.... The minute I turn the key to the start posistion, the brake lights start flashing and the "flasher canister" starts to click!
Anyone have any idea as to what the problem maybe or wires to look for in relationship to problem....thanks Mike
I would try another flasher first. I've seen them cause quite a variety of wierd problems. The one I got from a Vette vendor failed quickly.
I picked one uo at a local auto parts store and it works fine.

If you look at the plug...you will see some little plastic prongs... if one of these breaks it allows the metal to make contact with one next to it..
That is what was wrong with my lights...i had the same issue as you...my car does not have the flasher unit...because my car was not optioned with it...
i hope this helps...i also sent you a PM yesterday trying to explain my issue..
