Default Stop Light problems!

Someone told me that my right rear stoplight and turn signal was not working. bulb looked OK but I replaced. Still does not work but tail light works intermittenly. Looks like the socket is loose in attaching to the bezel, however, not much room and I can't seem to fix it. Is there any way to fix this problem without removing the mufflerr, or bumpers and real valance?:

If your muffler is bolted to the tailpipe, unbolt it. This should give you working room. You might try removing the entire spare tire tub. Check your ground wire on each side of the car while your in there. Dennis

I thought of loosning the muffler clamp at the rear, the spare tire might help as well. I can get two fingers on the socket but can't get a grip to properly install. I need to check the ground wire if I can find where it is! Thanks

Don't beat yourself up. Drop the mufflers, yes, I said both and the spare tire tub. Then you can get up in to the wires and see the grounds wires etc. Now is the time to check all the lights and connections. Dennis

I can't get to the connector by loosning the muffler, I don't think removing the muffler would help? I can feel the ground wire it is ok. What happned is the inner part of thecinnector came out of the metal tube that is supposed to fit into the housing! I have scrapped my arms trying to bet a grip on the connector but can't get a thunmb and funger on the connector! Won't it ber hard to remove and reinstrall the mufflers laying on the ground with hand tools?

I had this problem and changed the bulb to no avail. I was told that my turn signal switch may be stuck and it turned out to be that.

Had the same problem with my 65 coupe. Had to work on bulb connections because it was loose in the socket.

Try a test light before you take apart anything underneath. May just be that you need a bulb that fits better like mine.

Good luck.

as DOKK stated, any time there is a turn signal/brake light problem-look at the turn signal switch. it is the common demonanator and the only place where the two circuits cross.

Not the turn signal switch! The whold pigtail fell out the back . In fact the metal jacket is still in the housing but the plasric connector fell out. Do I have to take off bumpers before removing the rear valance?

Allegedly not. I began to take the valence off of my 65 for my own wiring replacement, but found that the lack of a rear exhaust system gave me all the room I needed.

Anyway, I do not believe you have to remove the bumpers at all.

I saw the title of this thread, "STOP LIGHT Problems", and thought you were going to say your car has a similar problem as my '66.....

.....every time the stop light changes from red to green, the car does a burn out!! Dont know what to adjust to fix it, but I am living with it!!

The problem that I've encountered on my '64, as well as a few other people's midyears, is that the wire corrodes and looses contact with the terminal within the rubber plug. I am referring to the wire's crimped connection to the terminal and not the contact between the two terminals (though these could also be the problem). And for some reason, the problem is typically in the front right turn indicator plug where it goes through the fiberglass.

I've had a problems with turn indicator and brake lights and scraping back some of the plug insulation and soldering these wires to the teminals cured it.

I don't know whether this same plug is your problem, but the same could occur on any plug.

first, is your ground to that socket good?
second, if the first is good, take a test light and touch both contacts, and see if they are working. then use brake, then use blinker.. ect....
third, angle (read jiggle) the light side to side while it is in the socket, it may make contact. if so, maybe you can bubba shim the socket so it grounds properly.

Ground wire proiperly attached, and I assume that the tail light would not work if not properly attached? The tail light works. Tried jiggling the bulb to no avail, apparently not geting power! I don't see how anybody can solder the connections as even with the spare tire tub removed and the muffler loostened just no room to work let alone solder?
