I am having my TI distributor and amplifier rebuilt/reconditioned and am trying to figure out what plug wires to install. After reading various comments about "correctly dated Packard" replacement parts that didn't last I am looking for recommendations. It would be nice to have the braided stainless steel covers, but if they are going to crap out in a year then I will go to whatever the next best thing is.

Ignition Wires
You didn't say what year your car is, but your profile says 66, and when you said "braiding", that made me assume you are talking BB. I got a set of OEM Delco wires from my local parts house a few years ago, but they are for a 67 and have the loops on the plug end of the wires for going under the valve cover bolts. I don't know if the 66 style wires are still available through Delco or GM. Just for your info, if you want to get the 67 style wires, the Delco part number is 458W, and the GM number is 8912284. My first set of OEM Delco wires lasted 15 years, and the current set has been on for a few years already with no problems. To use the 67 style wires, you would have to remove the spark plug shields.

My shielded replacements were junk within a few miles. I got a black Taylor wire kit and pulled the original wires out of the braiding and snaked the 8 mm wires back in. Like a big Chinese finger puzzle. I used the Taylor connectors and boots at the distributor and the Taylor terminals and GM boots at the plugs. It looks period correct and ignition is really solid. You might be able to find a kit of quality 7 mm black wires from someone which are closer to the original size. If you go this route either buy or borrow a good wire crimper as that's the only way to do a really good job.
