Default 427 ID help?

Hi Folks-
I'm hoping the Vette community can help me out identifying the motor in my 70 chevelle. The previous owner says it's a 427 -- I have a casting number of 3963512 from the back of the engine. What other numbers do I need to ID this motor? The vin pad is clean except for a 7 -- block might have been decked. Thanks!

MD

the 512 block was used as both a 427 in 1969 and a 454 in 1970.What is the date on the block?

Look to see if there is a weight on the harmonic balancer or the flywheel.

The harmonic balancer weight will be on the inside of it (you will have to feel it).

If there is a weight it is a 454, if not a 427.

But.................................That is just the block.

Check for the counterweight anyway.

I agree - check the balancer. I have a CE 427 in my old Camaro - was assembled in 1970 as a warranty replacement short block.

Here's what the back side of a 454 balancer looks like - note the cast-in weight.
