Actually yes and no. The M22 is an RPO code which I am sure you are aware of. The M21 has the same gear ratio as the M22 except the M22 was heavy duty. Heavy duty is a lower helix angle of the gears... Its the same tooth count gear set with a different helix angle and different allo specification.
The newer transmissions offered today combine the lower helix angles with better ratios and alloys to suit driving styles that make better sense today. So you can get a M22w, M22Z, M22X.

My bride's track car has an M22 and lightly muffled side pipes. You can hear the 1st gear noise over the sound of the exhaust. The noise level does lessen as you go through the gears, though.

I switched from a M21 close ratio to a M22 wide ratio and it is a completely different animal (3.70 gears in the rear). The whine is not that big of a deal and sounds like a hotrod which some of us like. The performance in first and second gear though is improved stop light to stop light if that is what you are looking for, although the gears in your M20 should be about the same-just more noise.-Jim

You can get the Italian Masiero M22 gearset from Auto Gear in a wide ratio for about $575.

I run a m-22w in the black wheel standing street car. I built it from a m-21. I love the trans. Strong and gear friendly. Oh, and I run a 4.30 rear. I actually do not hear the gear whine, But my Super40s are a little loud. It seems to me, it cost a lot more than $575.

m-22
Thanks for all your imput. I do alot of freeway driving and want to keep a 4 speed. Auto Gear has a new wide ratio m-22 that would allow me to change my rear end and get lower RPM's on the freeway at 80. In Ca, its hard to always be in the right lane driving a vette.

The purpose behind the M22 is strength. Unless your freeway is configured like the Nurburgring, what is the purpose of your wanting a box with gears cut at a 21 degree helix? I wasn't aware that the new wide ratio M22 had a final drive of less than 1:1.

M22 rockcrusher
Hi
Brother had a M22 "Rockcrusher" transmission in his 64 vette he had...Personally I think the "whine" is pretty cool...I like it...That and the hooker side pipes..How can you not like it?? Its like adrenaline pumping through your veins shifting the gears through a HURST shifter..

want to hear a sample of what it will sound like? Put your car in reverse and backup quickly. Reverse gears are straight cut similar to a 22's forward ones.
