So I won a set of armrest for 62 corvette. Really, all I want was the top of the armrest. Now, at first I did not notice the shipping was 10.00. Kind of high...

I won the bid and paid for the part using paypal. The high bid was 15.50. I live on the east side of the Miss like that really matters. Now, I receive the following from the seller:

" It will cost us $15 to ship. Please add $5 to the Pay Pal instant payment. The listing says that shipping west of the Mississippi may be more. Thanks for your help."

There is no way shippong should cost 15.00 to ship a part which weighs maybe 2 pounds and fits in a 5x5x8 box within the US.

My response was "you listed the price for shipping"

Then another response from the seller:
"Okay we'll give it a try with the understanding that if it is more you'll cover us. We make the statement in the listing about this and I personnally dislike being ripped off on shipping. Jeff"

It makes me mad! Now, I am going to quit buying parts on ebay!

He should just use the flat rate USPS medium box for about $9.00 anywhere in the U.S. A lot of companies make most of their money on shipping and handling. You've seen all of the $19.95 items on infomercials...Everything is $19.95 and if you act now we will send you another one FREE, you just pay the shipping and handling ( which is another $20 each...big ripoff.

yeah, I know... Talk about ripping people off. All I can say, I will post the person's information here if he does give me negative feedback. Plus, put a link in the negative comment.

Buying anything small online from any vendor now is kind of ridiculous. I've passed up several "under $15" items because the shipping is more than the piece....

The shipping prices were somewhat justified when oil was at $145/barrel but now its just plain padding somebody's pocket...

Just to see the other side for a second. I don't think a seller is allowed to give a buyer negatives any more. Anyway, $15 doesn't sound liked something to get mad over. It's shipping AND handling. I wouldn't want to take time out to box them up, provide the box and tape and take them to the post office for $5.00 additional dollars. I don't think the guy is trying to make a living off the handling charges. It's one of the things you have to look out for when you are finding hard to get and less expensive parts on ebay. It still comes out ahead of buying new or driving around trying to find the part you need. You pay a little for convenience, but you still come out ahead. Remember, you said the ad said, "may cost more for shipping west of the Mississippi". Doesn't seem dishonest if you bought anyway. Again, not defending anyone, just to take a look from the other side.

Not to defend anyone, but the seller only gets charged on the selling price not the shipping. Which is 12 percent now I believe.

I know what it takes to ship items. I just sold three items (console molding, rear license light and 5 headlight cups and rings). The most I charge is 7.50 for each item to ship within the US.

Plus, ebay charges for the selling the item and using paypal. They are making tons of $$$.

The last time,, I checked Illinois is on the east side of the might Miss.

Quite often the seller has limited options for shipping cost. Unless you can prove that he overcharged you, leaving him negative feedback would be unfair and would actually be a pretty dirty trick.

Shipping cost can also include cost of packaging and taking items to the post office. Not to forget all the time involved.

But with this being said, the seller should also provide as much info as possible about shipping cost including all aspects of it.

I just checked again to be sure, and sure enough, Illinois IS still east of the Mississippi. So, I'd send the seller an e-mail so stating and also stating that I intend only to pay the shipping listed as I'm NOT west of the Mississippi, and any failure on his part to live up to the "as advertised" statements on E-Bay will DEFINITELY result in my failure to purchase as well as registering a formal complaint with E-Bay.

The way I see it, that is part of the cost of doing business.

The price of tape and whatever your time is worth shouldn't be significant enough to incur a "handling" fee.

I know for a fact there are people padding the shipping cost and having a starting bid lower than normal. Overall, it nets the same. Ordinarily, the shipping is listed and that is what you pay when you enter a bid.

Shipping costs adds up eventually can cost 10-15 percent of the restoration. The part which upset me was when the guy accuses me of ripping him off for not paying the extra charge!

Just e-mail and tell them you are NOT west of the Mississippi and tell them about the Post Office flat rate boxes like 5thvet mentioned.

First of all. If the seller misrepresented the shipping costs? Stand firm on your position. If they have a "shipping to some areas may cost more" clause? It is up to the buyer to ask before bidding. If you aren't happy with how he deals with you? Leave him a negative. If he is a regular seller? Just the threat of a negative should set him straight. I would bet he does not sell much there. Or he would know how to market his shipping costs. Some infrequent sellers don't really know the true cost of shipping. So they price it high to cover themselves. And of course some will try to make extra on the shipping. Buyer be carefull. But don't cut yourself off from an excellent parts source. Because of a weak seller.

So true. Fact is the seller is an idiot. I run into those guys in brick and mortar stores too. Can happen anywhere. Ebay starts looking pretty good when you see the prices of the Corvette suppliers shipping. Shipping on those armrests would have easly exceeded $15

Your point is well taken on how things add up. If you are getting what you want, and you truly think the shipping for this particular transaction is unreasonable....just pay it, get your armrests....and never do business with the seller again. It just isn't worth all the hassle, emails, back and fourth...etc..(for $15)..especially if the armrests are exactly what you need, and get you one step closer to making your baby what you want it to be.

I understand and have also been upset at shipping charges. How about shipping charges for the wrong/broken part, having to pay for the return shipment and being charged a restocking fee I just purchased a part-flee bay-for my sons daily driver. I bought the part because I needed the part. I expected the seller to ship within a reasonable amount of time. I paid for it right away, ship it right away. They waited 5 days and then shipped. So its now almost 2 weeks out and still no part. Sometimes I really think flee bay is great but when you take a step back and think about your transactions most of them leave alot to be desired.
