Default Engine date question.

Have a 63 with a build date of B2. What would be an acceptable date range code for an engine block??
Also when painting an engine block do you use a primer?? It takes several coats to cover with the spray bombs. What is the best approach??

Not sure of an answer for your first question. Second question, super clean the block to remove any trace of grease/oil/etc....prime and paint. Dennis

B2 is the second week of October; a block for a car built on that date would typically have a casting date 2-6 weeks prior, although NCRS allows up to six months prior.

Dave,

Make sure you don't paint the pad . . . cover it with masking tape when you paint the block!!!

John does NCRS allow 6 months prior on all dated items? IE starter, alternator, master cylinder, rear end, distributor, FI unit?

Cheers,

Bob

The short answer is yes, although if LOTS of items are way out close to six months (as opposed to the more typical 2-6 weeks or so), it invites further scrutiny. Glass is an exception - up to a year is allowed, as it was made in infrequent "batches" due to low volume.

A June 62 date, for an October 62 car, is technically acceptable as per NCRS because it's within 6 months. It just isn't typical.

Is it a Flint motor??
Yes, you can see the 1/8 NPT pipe plug just above the timing area on the front of the block, which indicates the Flint application.

Is the date to early??
Officially, no.
