Default disc brake help

My 64 has disc brakes on all 4's. It's time to replace my pads, and I was thinking about putting new rotors on at the same time. I've noticed that I've got some wear on the front's, but not as much on the rear.

Any advise as to what kind of rotors I should put on? There are lots of options with big price ranges. I really like the sloted / cross drilled look. Are they a good performance upgrade also?

Here's a link to summit's offerings:

http://www.summitracing.com/search/M...&Ns=Price|Desc

Give me disc pad considerations also.

Thanks, Chris

A lot to change out... spindles, steering knuckles, hubs, bearings, rotors, shields, caliper mounting brackets, calipers, bonded pads, brake hoses.

All the parts to convert 63/64 drum to disk are listed on duntov motors web site. Might be a good place to start.

I think you mis-read my post. I already have disc all around. I just need to change pads & I'm thinking about upgrading my rotors.

Slotted/drilled rotor are a 'bling' modification, nothing to do with performance. Tire adhesion is usually the limiting factor on C2s, not brakes.

In as much as ALL vintage race organizations allow upgrade from drums to stock disc brakes for 63 and 64 vettes, there is NO need to upgrade your rotors as we all get very good (consistent and fade free) braking from the original equipment brakes with ONLY an upgrade to race linings (pads). I personally run PFC-01 pads, but you might want a street or street/track pad, which are widely available from all the brake pad manufacturers. What you DON'T want is drilled or slotted rotors. Just run stock components in new or recently rebuilt condition, with stainless steel braided lines and fresh race brake fluid (Castrol SRF) bled at least once per year. They work fine for us on the track and will be more than you will ever need for a street car.

Stainless braided lines in my opinion are a must for not only even braking at all 4 corners but safety!

Brakes are biased to the front. They will always wear more than the rear. Get pads that don't eat the rotors up. Some will wear them out faster than others. I think organic will be the best for street use.

Unless your rotors are badly worn or scored, leave them alone. For normal street use, the original organic pads will work fine, and won't wear your rotors; semi-metallic or "race" pads will. If you can't find normal organic pads at your FLAPS, Paragon has them.

I can feel a ripple on the surface of the rotors. At what point should you have them replaced?

By the way, I kinda like the bling look on the brakes. Especially with the red calipers, which I have along with stainless lines.

What I'm not sure about is quality differences on replacement? The prices range from $50 per up to $ 150 per.

I say "bling away" and get the slotted/drilled rotors if that what makes you happy. I'm contemplating the same thing on my '64 w/17" wheels. My brake system was salvaged from a '69 shark donor so it shouldn't be a very involved swap. I don't autocross or drag race so new bling rotors are perfect for my easy cruisin' needs. A Hydroboost system is also on my "wish list". I want to get rid of the power booster to clean up the engine compartment.

Ditto on the stainless steel lines.

Take a look at this pad.

The Carbotech Bobcat 1521™ is our high performance street compound that is our most successful compound. The Bobcat compound is known for its awesome release and modulation, along with unmatched rotor friendliness. Like our AX™ & XP™ line of compounds, Bobcat 1521™ is a Ceramic based friction material offering minimal rotor damage and non corrosive dust. Bobcat 1521™ offers outstanding performance, even when cold, low dusting and low noise with an excellent initial bite. This compound’s virtually perfect linear torque production provides incredible braking force without ABS intervention. Bobcat 1521™ operating range starts out at ambient and goes up to 900°F. Bobcat 1521™ is suitable for ALL street cars, perfect for your tow vehicle, police cruiser, and has won multiple SCCA Solo 2 and Prosolo National Championships. The Bobcat 1521™ compound has been found to last two-three times longer than OE pads you can purchase at a dealership or national retailer. Bobcat 1521™ compound has also been found to extend the life of your rotors 2-3 times. That’s one of the beauties of Carbotech Ceramic brake compounds. Bobcat 1521™ is NOT recommended for any track use.

If you drive your car on the street 98% of the time you don't need any race spec brake pads. Ask me how I know! I had a set of Hawk pads and VBP assured me they would not squeal, well they did, and I returned them. If whatever pad you use and it squeals when you apply the brakes, despite warming them up....it will drive you crazy and make your car appear to be ratty. Basic pads from Paragon are all you need. As mentioned...it's all in how you use it. My brakes are a basic $300 kit from Muskegon back in about 1997 or so. Sleeved calipers, lines, silicone fluid, dual M/C and whatever pads they threw in the kits.

They are still in good shape after lots of street use and regularly hauling this thing down from 140+ mph trap speeds.

I don't road race...so having them stop well when cold is important to me at the track as well as on the street.

Ok, don't laugh too hard, but I've been really, really happy with Durlast Gold ceramic pads from Auto Zone. Lifetime warranty - they wear out, you get new ones free, no questions asked. And they don't squeak. Have em on my 03 Cobra, too and they were the only pads that didn't squeak on that car, too.

I have used CarboTech brake pads in a Neon ACR which was a National Champion car in D/S and have used them in two VWs that were campaigned in F/SP. They are an outstanding product that delivers 110%. Their range of product, vis a vis application, is outstanding and I have always found them to listen to what I want. Their advice, and subsequent delivery of product, has been spot on. There is no guesswork here. Give them a call. I am sure they would be very helpful in determining the correct application for your car.
