Default Resto Corvettes

Please excuse my ignorance but I don't really understand what a Resto Corvette is. Is it just a old corvette with a modern engine and newer Corvette suspension underneath, or is it a whole made up car from start to finish like a Cobra kit car?

A resto vette usually is an original body on a modern chassis with modern convieniences. A restorer usually puts close to 100K into a top notch one but they can also put a whole lot more in it, because creating what you want can be very costly sometimes. Hope this ansers your question.

Usually a restomod is an updated chassis/suspension/drive train/electronics/interior/audio system housed in an original body (or bodies). I know of one restomod that had 8 C1 donor cars! The classic lines of the early vettes are preserved while everything else (nearly) is new/modernized. I think (others can chime in) that some complete C1 'kit' cars were made at some point (a '53 kit was available I believe) but I've never seen one after attending dozens of shows.

Of course one can always cobble together a self-made 'kit' from after-market panels and pieces I think. Some parts are just not reproduced though...e.g. C1 door post pillars for example.

I have seen a 1953 corvette kit car.

They are really easy to spot. Everything fits really nicely.

Vette Masters I believe is the manufacture. I saw the finished product at Corvettes Carlisle.

Here is the same product but sold by Crane.

Crane? Now there's a sterling organization with which to deal. Find the original vendor and skip these theives.

I certainly was....I know of no reproduction source....and '61 and '62 door posts are different. (Front vertical face of '61 has horizontal serrations)...

I think that Ernie Coffman was working on the windshield posts. There are no door post reproductions.

I had a foundry/metal casting company from Hong Kong contact me not too long ago looking for work. I sent them some detailed pictures of the C1 door and windshield posts and never heard back from them. If the Chinese can't make them I guess we are out of luck.

The door posts are actually a pretty simple part and should be fairly easy to reproduce, but will they ever recover the cost of the tooling is the question?
It would be great to see them made, but it would be a pretty limited market. I would love to see them made of brass rather than pot metal, as they would be easy to put show quality chrome on, and pitting would be eliminated.

If Coffman is reproducing some, I hope they fit better than his first generation C1 top frames did! He finally seems to have gotten them right, but they sold a bunch of ill-fitting frames before they got it right.

Regards, John McGraw

Can I push the question a little further since my mechanical knowledge is limited. Another words C1 body's panels are made to fit a C4 frame? Or is a C4 frame made to fit a C1 body panel. All this seems very confusing since the width, length and wheel base of these cars is totally different. Is there a web page which explains this better if no one can answer?
