OK, I am going to get a price from a trusted mechanic in the area that has worked on the Vet before. I don't need more pain.
Wow Kerrmudgeon, you must be a salesperson for a transmission repair shop. You sold me! """"lying on your back while wrestling 50 LBs of tranny is going to hurt, if not today, soon and for a long time.
-stuff falling in eyes, ripped knuckles, other injuries.(coronaries, strokes, etc.)
-possibly ruining your transmission by bending the input shaft trying to reinstall it.""""
You forgot to add: the jackstands could collapse and the car will fall on me and maime me for life. The ratchet could slip out of my hands and break a few teeth. The transmission oil will go in my eyes and blind me in both eyes...
I am on the downhill side of fifty so I know a little about the age thing. I put my own lift together, but with a college kids muscle. You may be able to have some younger person help with you instructing, at least on the heavy end. I know young kids are hard to find but it may give you piece of mind knowing you were the technician and they were the muscle. Who knows the kid may appreciate learning something about a great car.
No offense but try getting a kid away from his X-box and triple frappuccino....and then if he gets hurt screwing around on your car I hope you can resurrect Johnny Cochran to defend you...
If you don't have the tools and skills I would pay somebody that does this work...professionally. I have no problem being a wuss if it saves my back, crushed fingers and possibly a botched job.
The folks that 'egg you on' to tackle this yourself have probably done it 1/2 dozen or more times before and think its no big deal....they most likely have forgotten the pain of doing it that first time..and they have no skin in YOUR game..

To say nothing of the wife's inevitable wrath:
-Don't you track in that grease on your shoes on my clean floors.
-what are you doing with those filthy parts on the kitchen table and in my sink?
-what's that smell in here,...like chemicals...are they dangerous?
- look at you now, bleeding, I told you, you old fool to get it fixed, but no no.......
-I know what your doing out in the garage, you can't fool me....
-the neighbors are all upset at the language comin out of the garage, sound travels you know.....
-forget it buddy, your not coming near me with those hands.

If you have a wife like that you need quiet time with your Vette! Or better yet trade her in on a hoist .............................. I have a hoist but no Vette yet!!
I have changed quite a few clutches in my time. I was also young and in great shape. Now I am 62 and lying under a car and dropping a tranny to change out a clutch is not my idea of a good time. I can still split a cord of Oak when the need is there. Take it to your mechanic you may need to have the flywheel resurfaced as well. There is no such thing as a wuss when it comes to doing something that might cause you an injury. Greg

Last weekend I removed the muncie and clutch out of a 69 camaro of a buddies. He had a two post lift as well as a transmission jack so that made things much easier. It took us about half a day removing the the old transmission and clutch and about the same re-installing a rebuilt transmission and new clutch. I am an average mechanic working on these old cars and his knowledge is superior to mine. I have not changed one in a 60 vette. It was not a bad job. A bit sore today .
