Default 63 Steering box re-build/replace?

I heard a noise in the front end of my 63 (no-power steering) last week while turning into my driveway. Previous post; http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c1-a...k-in-63-a.html. I checked all the steering, suspension, wheels, etc. and could find nothing visibly wrong. It was all replaced approx. 8K mi. ago. While the weight is off the front wheels, the noise doesn't occur. I just returned from mechanic's shop. They did some explorations and believe it to be in the steering box. It sounds like something in a bind, and then it snaps free. It only occurs when turning away from center, usually to the right. My question's; 1) Is removing the steering box a home project? I have hand tools, but may have to buy bigger wrench/sockets. Do I need any "special" tools to remove/replace the box. 2) Is it advisable to have this box re-built (it has approx. 99K mi., has been kept lubed, and is still tight) or should I replace it? My first thought is to service this one, as I know it fits correctly. Re-builder referrals on Left Coast? Any shared wisdom is appreciated- lib

I would contact Gary Ramadei (aka GTR1999) and send to him for rebuild. He is the best.

I do not know of anyone on the West Coast. It's only around 3-4 days UPS from California to Connecticut.

I have the box I removed from my 63 when I converted to the Jeep box. It had 52,000 miles on it, it was removed, disassembled, cleaned, checked bearing surfaces and found them to be good. Reassembled with new seal kit and lubed properly. Had it back on the car for less than 1,500 miles. Works fine.

Asking $225.00 outright. Core value is $195.00 according to Zip or Ecklers.

You can PM me or e mail me at vettelovers@***.net.

There is a steering box that looks stock, but will give a tighter turning radius. Why settle for 40 year old technology. Check with Van Steel in St. Pete florida or search it out. Good Luck.

Turning radius is not dictated by the steering box. It may turn quicker with greater ease but not a tighter radius.......IMO.

Cheers,

Bob

When your steering box is worn, there are several degrees of steering lock that are "free play", and therefore out of the driver's control. This is dangerous, so I would have a professional rebuild your box.

Last year I went through my front suspenion went it came to the streeing box I was shocked at the prices.I did a lot of shopping around. New boxes ran over $400.A rebuilt kit which included the gears was over $300.I settled for a rebuilt for about $250.If they are going to rebuit it for $150 that is most liky just seals not the gears that cost the money Good luck....Vince
