Was there ever a 365HP with factory Power Steering?
Hello,
Was there ever a N40 Power Steering option available with the 365HP corvette in 1964 or 1965? I mean factory original and not added by owner? Because someone is trying to sell us a 1964 with this and he swears its original factory optioned. Please let us know. Thanks

Hello,
It may or may not be the original pan......but my question was ..did they even make original 1964 or 1965 corvettes with high horse 327 365hp with factory power steering? Thanks

GM did not offer it on 6 quart oil pan 327's due to clearance problems of the hydraulic ram with the oil pan. Those cars did not have the steering damper either for the same reason. This is noted in Nolan's book too. Was one or some ever installed by the factory....maybe, but the owner needs factory docs as proof. I once saw a teak wheel on a 67 and the guy had factory proof...so things happened depending on who you were and who you knew. Maybe others on the forum know stories on this.

I met a fellow who had a Z06 convertible. He was told by experts over and over that Chevrolet never made a Z06 convertible. Well, wouldn't you know they did. I suppose it is possible that someone could have ordered a 365 hp with a small oil pan and power steering but why would they have? Now a special order fuelie with power steering would be a little more believable (imo).

Show me an engine code (or an engineering work order) for a SHP, solid lifter 327 with the five quart pan and I'll show you the possibility of ordering same with power steering or a steering damper.

So does that also mean that no 65 327/350HP cars had PS? I just purchased the entire PS set up brand new for my car...but I never thought about it not clearing the pan.

Not sure about what the 350 HP motor came with but if it has a 6 quart oil pan it won't fit.

Because the standard production oil pan on a 350 HP car was the 5 quarter (smaller pan) you could get PS. It also came with the damper if no PS was on the car. Thus with 65, 66 and 67 350 HP cars you could order PS as a standard production option. I have had them all and seen them all on the judging field too.

Speaking of the early '65 350 hp cars only.................................... ..
There's a rumor that they had the 6 quart pan and that prevented PS from being factory ordered. Later cars had the 5 quart pan. This may be all rumor.
In any case, forget about ANY of the 365/375 cars having factory installed PS.

Huh....well, my 65 has a larger oil pan (not positive its a 6qt...but it is much bigger than a std pan) and my car is an early 65. Vin 5495 and has factory drum brakes.

That's correct - power steering wasn't available with either the 365hp or 375hp engines due to the 6-quart oil pan, and there was no way to order either one of those engines with a 5-quart pan.
