So this is out of VIN 16070 of the run. The 1 is only a "place holder" the VIN sequence is 106070. Cast on Mar 16th, assembled on Mar 19th of '65. That's a very early one, the first seems to be in Feb just before sequence number 11059, the last - sometime in July.
No. The last '65 VIN sequence number was 123564. Job one always begin with 100001, not 000001, and since the first L-78 was around sequence number 112000, you're probably are looking at an original L-78 case cast on March 16, 1965. The "5" preceeding the sequence number on the pad stamp is the model year - 1965.
Sounds like an original factory installed L-78 engine case to me.
Of course, you'll probably what to know why the sequence number began at a hundred thousand - one instead of one. So would I, as I have no idea. Maybe JohnZ has an answer.
OK... got it. I was only looking at the last 4 digits and overlooked the fact that it was 116070 (not 126070) which is before the last vin of 123564. Thanks for clearing up my confusion.
