Unless you're looking to build a dedicated drag car with mega-cubes, I'd forget the tall deck. Besides being a little taller and wider than a standard block, parts are limited and can be pricey. You can choose from dozens of different intakes for a standard deck but only a few for tall decks (you can get adapters though, for a price). While standard headers will bolt up, odds are against them working in your car (but custom ones can be had for several times the price). Standard deck 540's can make huge power without the cost or hassles.

Any Mk IV heads will bolt on to a tall deck block. The timing cover, oil pan and bellhousing are the same, too. You'll also need 6.535" connecting rods if you're using short deck pistons.

If you want to use a short deck intake manifold, here's an adapter:

You'll also need a tall deck distributor.

Plan on using the flattest intake manifold you can find. A 1971 454 low HP (Quadrajet) manifold might make it.

Exhaust is going to be a problem.
