Default plan to put in trip computer/speedometer

i have the wrong speedo gear. and the steering wheel blocks speedo anyway.
has magnet & sensor to pick up speed off wheel. calibrates easily and could be ~perfect i suppose.
gives MPH
trip time(clock stops when car stops)
average speed
odometer
trip odometer
auto start, self contained battery.
small enough to mount in a dozen places, fits right over my old oil or water gauge.
but 1st i have to learn how the 2 buttons do all that sheet.

Bill
i'd be nervous when parked top down in public, that someone would walk off with a gps.
Prefer something wired into the car.
Also, i don't have a gps.
Thanks for responding, not much interest on this

my best location is the base of the windshield, by the left defroster; wire will run thru duct. This is real easy to read, almost like a head-up display on a c5,.
Speedo is 1/2" high LCD display, plenty big enough. Odo is 1/4" under speedo.
I won't be using the other functions very often, too many clicks.
It shows a + or - above the speedo indicating accel or decel, maybe handy if it is real sensitive, with my hand throttle should i go on an open highway.
It counts reverse too! adds to distance traveled.
Won't add wheelspin as i'll put it on a front wheel.

this is the 1st car for me that reads MPH in reverse how fast do u go for a "cop turn"? never tried one of those.
so it took 1hr to make a bracket to mount the sensor. But, another hr to snake the wire thru.

Distance traveled shouldn't be much of an issue with a one-gallon gas tank .

i think i know why new cars dont read mph in reverse.
try backing up at, like 35mph, and imagine turning around to look at the speedo

i {just now] tried your suggestion to twist the motor mount cw to keep from tearing up water pump gaskets. mine went after only 5,000 mi, 10 years.
now i put gas in ~ once in 2 months with my 4 gal capacity.
keeps gas fresh and tastey

Takes the bolt-to-hole slop out of the water pump/motormount-to-block attachment to eliminate the shear in that joint under torque. Before torquing the four water pump bolts (with the engine supported from below), push down on the driver's side of the mount and pull up on the passenger side of the mount, then torque the four bolts. When the engine torques up under acceleration, the bolts are already bottomed out in the holes in the direction of torque, so it doesn't tend to put a shear load on the "sandwich" of parts and cause leaks. Doweling it will also cure the leak issue, but that's a lot of work.

Default 1st test!

I am impressed
This is such an improvement, not having to look down to get the speed! A true HEAD UP display, but not projected like on a c5.
I was doing 44.8 in a 45; old speedo read ~52 about where i calculated, due to the 4.11 rear. It was just too much trouble to change to gears in the trans, and i'm glad i didn't, the head up is SO SO much better.
And a seriously accurate odometer. To my corner it is 0.0810 mile or 427 feet.
1st stop was 0.908 mile, round trip 1.828 mi.
I rate it a 8 of 10 points.
I will confirm accuracy on a stretch of highway with mile markers. It is adjustable within 1/100" tire diameter.
1 point deducted for being difficult to access all functions
1 deducted for being slow to calculate speed during rapid acceleration.
.
Another Matt Gruber exclusive!
.
The + or - sign indicates if i'm faster or slower than the average speed, not gaining or losing mph. This would be ideal for the Sliver State Challenge, where the winner goes closest to their class speed without exceeding it.

i had to think about why it works so well. i was really surprised on my 1st drive
1st, i'm 57 and my eyes don't like to focus close, speedo is now at arms length + 6". No i dont use bifocals.
2nd, while i've owned 50+ cars, this is the 1st time i got to put the speedo where i wanted it. i spent lots of time trying different locations before the install. It is now best for me, not some designers idea. I'd expect everyone to have a different position. There is no "one size fits all".
and 3rd, it is in line of sight with the road, the head up position. Before, due to the smaller steering wheel, i had to look way down. Tall guys might have the same problem.
.
Tech says i can use 2 magnets and half the wheel size to get faster re-cal. But, for now, i'll be watching for traffic when acc. much safer.
