I pulled the starter out of my '65 yesterday in conjunction with removing the powerglide transmission, (the car is my wifes crusier), I of course didn't expect to find a correct starter but I can't identify its origin. Can someone who has the proper manuals tell me the application and date? Thanks to everyone in advance! #1109061 8E 5 5.
It's not in Colvins Corvette book, but if you are going chronologically, its' number fits in somewhere between between starters made in 78-79. So with the date code you've given I'd guess May 5, 1978.
That certainly is my starter housing, of course the snout is toally different for the forklift application! When you get a rebuilt anything from a parts house, this just goes to show you, you are just buying a "pig in a poke."Thanks for your "investigation"

In that ad it states "Starter- 1109061 9F24 (June 24, 1965)". That starter was built June 24 1969. ALL 65 small block Corvettes came with a #1107320 starter.
When starters go through a commercial rebuilder, the date stamp on the armature case becomes "generic" - the same case was used on thousands of different Delco starter applications, and becomes just a part in a bin when they assemble a rebuilt starter. Some rebuilders these days are grinding off the date stamp entirely to reduce "comebacks".
My books show it to be for a GM with chevy engine. Low torque. That long tapered style case didn't come out until the mid 70's, so 78 sounds right. On that style case, just because the field lead comes out closer to the end doesn't mean it is high torque like it did on the older style.
