Default GM crate engine

Has anyone installed a ramjet 350 PFI in a c1? part number 12499120. Does it fit? Is this a good setup? Thanks

I have a Ram Jet 350 in my wife's '62, but I used side motor mounts rather than the stock setup. I lowered the engine about 1.5" from the stock location so as to ensure good hood clearance. I believe there are some on the forum that have installed this engine with the stock mounts, and some had to cut the reinforcing rib on the bottom of the hood for clearance.

I like the Ram Jet, but the stock tune is really, really rich. I have had tuning software for the Ram Jet for a few years now and have improved the mileage from around 25mpg to almost 30mpg. I also had what is known as the Ram Jet "cruise control" problem, but I pretty much have it eliminated now, see www.carols62.com/ramjet.

Do not expect any assistance at all from GM on this engine. If you have a problem you are pretty much on your own.

Real nice car. Thanks for posting the pictures. Engine comments are very helpful. Your wife is one lucky lady! Charley

Charles,

That is some really good information on you site. I have a ZL1 Ramjet and hope to get it running this spring/summer.

With all you went through, I was wondering why not just go with a Fast setup?

Thanks
Chuck

Thanks for the information Charles.
I like the idea of FI but I wonder if its worth the hassel?
Yes a zz3 would be sweet too but I still like the FI unit from GM for the price if it will fit and not be problematic.

George ..

I have the Ramjet 350 in my '56, runs great with a Tremec 5 speed behind it, wouldn't do it any other way ... no issues with clearance (stock mounts) and with the MEFI4 controller that is now standard on the Ramjets and is on mine - no issues, (the earlier MEFI3 controllers ran rich) .. also there are 4-5 members of the Tri Five Chevy Club I belong to that run the Ramjet all with great success .. GO FOR IT!

Initially when I was trying to fix my engine, there was no tuning software available for the Ram Jet engines. A few years ago at Corvettes@Carlisle I ran into one of the programmers for OBD Diagnostics, the company that sells the Ram Jet tuning software that I am using now. If I had had their software back when I was having trouble I could have saved myself a bunch of hassle trying to deal with GM. A lot of people criticize the MEFI controller used on the Ram Jets, but actually it is pretty sophisticated, being able to support such things as coil on plug ignition (separate coil for each plug), DIS (distributor less ignition systems), 2 BAR map sensors, and alternate fuel tables.

Man, 56 Texas, that looks great! Just realizing, I don't see bolts for the valve covers, and those are Vortec heads with that unit. I'm stumped. LOL

56 Texas, Thanks for the information. Nice set-up. If it is not asking to much it sure would be nice to see more detailed pics of your car. I am sure other members would agree. Charley

56 Texas...I like the mods you made to your car. How much room did the a/c take up under the dash? Really 56 Texas I might bother you with a few questions in the future. Hope you don't mind. I do appreciate you posting the pictures of a cool ride. You can email me as many as you like. I'd appreciate that. Thanks, Charley
I could spot Toms car from here! Didn't think I knew. Thanks again 56 Texas!!! Charley

Thanks again 56 Texas, your car looks great. That is the exact set up I want, now I just have to talk myself into spending the money cause everything costs more in the great white north.

350 ram jet $6650.00
tremmec $3800.00 with tax, shipping, brokerage.
misc $2000.00
smiles when driving - priceless.
