The car in the photo runs a Hemi and you can see that it is a 440 in the engine bay shot but the multiple carb system is the same layout on the race Hemi as the 440 staggered setup.

Rich,
Is that engine bay picture SUPPOSED to be from that white RAMCHARGER car????
(DUH, I've answered my own question!!!!!!!! The engine bay picture is in a RED car, so obviously, NOT the white car!!!)

If so, someone has their facts mixed up, because that APPEARS to be the 426 Max Wedge engine which was the predecessor to the HEMI which came out in mid-64.
I don't know when the exact changeover occured from the 426 Max Wedge to the HEMI, nor do I know if the 426 wedge continued to be available after the HEMI was introduced.
We need a Mopar guru to step in here and help out.

Good question Tom. I was always impressed that my former '69 Plymouth Roadrunner had the complete factory "Coyote Duster" Ram Air setup, complete with the shrouded air cleaner, underhood mounted chamber/baffle assembly to the hood scoops and underdash control cable. A pretty impressive setup until you look at the scoops on an OEM '69 Road Runner hood. They are just merely horizontal openings at either side of the hood, no forced air from the front, merely whatever air was "floating" at the top of the hood at that particular time. More likely to catch bird droppings than air.

Tom:

You caught me on the 440 v 426 max wedge. I mistook the photo for a standard B block Chrysler. My bad.

I'm not a guru but I grew up on Mopars in the 60's & 70's including my friend's 67 440 GTX, 68 Hemi Roadrunner and 70 Duster 340 as well as my 68 Charger (318 boo hoo) and 69 Dart 340.

Like I said, the pictured 426 in the red car with the offset carbs mimicks the race Hemi setup. The street Hemi's had dual AFB carbs in line front to rear. The old 413 with the LONG ram tubes that hung the carburetors over the valve covers were similar in appearance.

What the Ramchargers did was to incorporate that big hood scoop to force the air down into the carbs. They manufactured openings in the hood under the scoop to feed directly into the carbs.
