Couple of frames being 'offered' at the Kissimmee meet. I was looking at the 63 frame which was described as near perfect with just painted over surface rust. For 3200.00 I was interested until I looked closer into the frame and crossmember holes. There was a multitude of BONDO cones coming thru the rust holes! The frames had been bondo skimmed, sanded and painted.
I in no uncertain terms told the vendor he should inform potential buyers of this. I was then asked to leave.
Sorry, but I feel that is an intentional attempt to defraud a buyer into buying a defective and possibly hazardous frame. I would be remiss if I did not post this for those that might be in need of a frame. I have learned a lot in this forum by its members in my trials in putting my car back together and I would hate for anyone to go thru what I have been dealing with on my car which had a poorly repaired similar hidden 'repair patch'.
Hope I can post pics, never did that before.... CRAP, I need a web address for my pics? I'm too old for this. Will figure it out later today, gotta play with my car.
Angelo
Got it! Now to figure out how to change the date/time in the camera. snicker.
You can see the bondo cone at 6 o'clock in center large hole.

Save your photos on Photobucket or a similar site, then you can link to them here on this site, click the small "envelope" looking thingy at the top of the Reply window, insert the url of the picture on Photobucket.
You'll get a little help from the forum if you give it a try and need help.

the vendor should be ask to leave..with a police escort...no reason for this other than plain out greed...it borders on "theft by deception" in my book..
By changing the frame , my guess is your not worried abought matching numbers. You can get new frames from vett products in Michgan, made from factory tooling. Or do what I did get a restoration frame frome a company in california called america's finest corvettes they are made from c3 frames they do nice work.
I bought what David Crane described as a solid birdcage from him at what one would consider a premium price. FEDEX rejected his initial crate which was was supposed to be done by a packing company. His second effort partially disassembled enroute. I specified a desired delivery date which he ignored which resulted in rerouting the shipment and significant increased expense. The birdcage is what I would classify fair shape with poorly repaired problems that will have to be corrected and additional damage not done in shipment that will require additional repairs. I wouldn't buy a used iron bar from Crane's Corvettes. Unless you can go to his shop and personally inspect the item and take immediate possession without the item leaving your sight, DO NOT buy anything from David Crane. Additionally, in the same order, I purchased a BB core support and drip rails. He put the sheet metal drip rails in the same box with the heavy core support and no packing. One drip rail was bent.
BTW, the crossmember on Crane's coupe frame is not for the '67 parking brake linkage.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the vendor's name.
It could help others from paying for something they aren't expecting.
Actually, once he saw me use the camera and I commented on the bondo, our conversation went downhill very quickly. I just did not get around to getting his name since I was done and there was no name or company on his trailer. I didn't want to make a bigger scene with my wife and son there.

Actually, I'm undecided about what route I am going to settle on. Both of my rear kickups and 2 crossmembers should be replaced. If I go that route, I am still numbers matching and about 1 half the cost. BUT, if I just buy all new, I can just start putting things back together quicker.
Just how much of the frame can be replaced before it is no longer numbers matching? ALL but he numbers themselves? I am probably going to lean towards a known GOOD and SAFE end result, with or without the numbers
Contact Van Steel in St Pete. They can repair frames or possibly find you a replacement at a reasonable price. They also do full chassis restorations.
Van Steel did the chassis on a Vette I bought - found lots of little things wrong - like ALL the lower control arm bolts were loose, missing caliper pins, "fully restored" brake system with 1/4 inch of sludge in the master....
Oops. Bad day at Flat Rock. The stuff they have done for me has been good.
Actually it is Bad Day at Black Rock. Geezer one armed army vet kicks **** in a small southwest town. Starring Spencer Tracy (hero) and Robert Ryan (villian). (Didn't remember Tracy untill this morning.)
Too bad some swap meet vendors get a chubby by screwing over the next guy. Maybe it helps their self image.

I had never heard of the movie before you mentioned it and I did a search. The expression holds whether you are in Blackrock, where ever or Flat Rock, North Carolina, or just standing on a flat black rock. You have good deals or bad deals experienced by different customers with various vendors. The key is to avoid the known crooks and to know what you are looking at as the OP did.
Avoid all the grief and disappointment associated with a used (and questionable) old frame that may or may not be "restored" properly and get a new one; they're only about $1K more than the Bondo special you looked at.
