Default Rear valance question.

Installing my rear valance on my 65 Coupe and where it attaches at the bottom to the rear quarters there is about a 1/8 to 3/16 gap. Should there be something between?? Gasket or sealer?? Dont want to force things. Thanks Dave

Default Rear valance

Nope, nothing at all.
They just touch each other and the bolt/nut holds them together.

Our 67 had nothing there when taken off or new one placed on. Are you replacing with a new one? If so, (I found out) be prepared for possible small to large gap and contour issues.

Default Valence Gap

You can minimize the gap by loosening all the bolts and then tightening from the center outward while gently pushing the panel outboard.

At the bottom corners, there is supposed to be a slight gap. In fact, a thin shim goes between the valence and quarter panel.

That's correct - although you never see them any more, shims were released on an "as required" basis to make that gap appear parallel if the body was a bit wider than the valance panel; they're shown in the Assembly Manual.

Ryan:

Nothing special. Upper A-arm shims work well because of the "tab" on top to grip. Standard U shims work too -- just harder to get positioned.

I have worked on them for more than 40 years and I have never seen an original shim there. My opinion that would be a very rare occurence.

Default To shim or not to shim

Mine never had shims and as was said maybe it was a option if the body didn't align good enough.
I have had my '65 since August 24, 1967 and am the second owner.
There were no shims on mine but then again mine seem to align properly too.
Peace.
