Default Antennae Problems

Sometimes it will go up/down and sometimes not at all...it has a good ground and new wiring, although the switch is original...is there a way to check the switch to make sure it is not bad...

I am electrically challenged...so talk slow

unhook the power wire to the antena and hook up a test light and have another person run the antena up and down. This will tell you if the switch is good. If there is a bad connection somewhere it will not alow enough power to run the antena motor. it runs out of amperage. it is importanrt to clean all conections and use dielectic grease.

Jack,
Moe that likely dirty contacts in the switch or a loose connection where the red wire (12V) connects to the switch.

Pull the connector from the antenna.

you can test the circuit all the way to the antenna by putting a volt meter pos meter line into one of the two slots in the wiring harness connector and the neg meter line to ground (good frame connection)

flip theantenna switch one way then the other and the mater should show 12volts in one (switched) direction.

change the pos meter line to the other harness connector slot and flipping the switch should show 12volts in the opposite (switched direction)

if that works, the antenna has a problem

if you don't have 12volts in one or both directions, pull the console side panel off and see if you have 12volts at one of the switch lines. if so, fliping the switch should produce 12volts at one of the other 2 wires

i would start at the radio side panel and remove it to access the switch....only 3 wires and the middle post is 12v.....jump to each post to check the switch then jump the harness plug to check the wiring..jmo

Default Try this

I had an issue with my '65 power antenna (rebuilt) and new rear harness and was bummed out.
What I found was that my new wiring harness plug allowed one of the connectors to push back into the boot when plugging the harness into the antenna plug.
I pulled the boot back and the connectors forward enough to directly plug them in first and then pushed the boot up tight.
Problem solved.
