*** For those contemplating replacing bulb in their dash ***

I'm in the process of completely refreshing/upgrading my dash. New dash pad skins, whiteface, volt meter, wiring, ???

Replacing light bulbs (1816's) with new bulbs (1817's). Here is an unscientific test of 1816 vs. 1817. As you can see 1817 (right) is noticeably brighter. Hope they will improve night time viewing of gauges.

And FYI -----

Here is the various bulbs. Most common replacment today is the China 1816. I had both the GE & Mexico bulbs in my dash.

Have you looked at LED lighting? Just finished white gauges and want to replace with LED bulbs. I'm told they use less power, run cooler, last forever and are much brighter.

Also, see earlier post about white gauges.

Heres a link to replacement 1817 bulbs. Not sure if they are actual westinghouse.

http://www.atlantalightbulbs.com/eca...SE1817BULB.htm

Does westinghouse still make it?

I went with LED lights in my '60 dash. I have LEDs in my tail lights and the lights in the bumpers and just ordered LED lights for the front turn signals as well as the rear license plate lights. I have the ability to plug my car in at shows and when I do, I turn on the running lights. I was looking for a place to buy the courtesy light, #90 in LED but havent had any luck yet. IMO, LED is the only way to go.....

Here's the box they came in and have the "W" mark on the bulbs.

The one from the link I posted. Has a silver base instead of brass. So I figured it was a westinghouse replacement. Must be their picture is off.

More un-scientific test.

I refreshed clock -- light blue background and whiteface gauge. Installed 1816's then 1817's. Pic's on workbench in completely dark room.

George

Whiteface clock

1816's

1817's

How do you like them? I've always had good luck with that site but haven't tried the LEDs

Default LED Bulbs

Has anyone tried to use the BA9 LED bulbs from superbrightleds.com, they have four leds per bulb. They must be brighter, they do not have the warm white type though. Just wondering if they fit in the hole of a C-2 dash. $1.98 each.

http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-b.../index.cgi?act

If the above link doesn't work, just type in BA9 bulbs to the right on the top of the home page . This is where I buy all my LED bulbs.
Come to think of it, they must fit in the hole , I'm wondering if they are too bright.
