The St. Louis bodies had the 2 letter suffix and the AO Smith bodies had only one for the red trim. The wierd thing with yours is it shows 409G is for a 867 ( Convertible AO Smith body). The 837 code for red vinyl ( that you have right) was 490H. Keep in mind that is what is in my book and I have seen incorrect information from time to time. I'm sure someone with a 64 can confirm or correct.Don

I'll try to help. I have the Vol. 2 Restoration Guide. First of all, it states "Unfortunately, A. O. Smith trim tags did not carry the complete ECL suffix, and therefore cannot be accurately deciphered." Great start, I know. 490 indicates a vinyl upholstery, "A" would be red. 936A should be 936AA. That is ermine white, like mine. 837 is a coupe. Here is a start. I'll keep looking and I'm sure others who know more than I will chime in.

Click on each item, a dropdown box will appear with the codes. Match up what you have from your trim tag. Hope this helps you.

Don,

I think you have something transposed here, 490G = red vinyl coupe(837) and 490H = red vinyl convertible(867).

Block Castiing E24 = May 2, 1964
Body Build E01 =May 1, 1964
Engine Pad F0505 = Flint May 5, 1964
VIN 17574 = May 12, 1964

Looks like the dates line up very nicely.

Dave,
No that was the problem I was having with that orginal response. I took that out of " Cars and Parts Magazine's Catalog of Corvette ID Numbers 1953-1993. I was leary because I have had other things corrected that I found in this book. The book has it backwards! Probably should buy a better reference.

I own Cars and Parts magazine's "Suzie Q", the "restoration" of a 1963 SWC. The writers obviously didn't know what they were looking for when they purchased their restoration candidate.
