Good morning guys, I'm debating as part of my interior restoration replacing my locks on the doors, ignition and glove box. I'm not sure that what I have is right and not sure if I can get them all working again. The ignition and glove box locks work but the doors have always been problematic.
So my question is how where they keyed from the factory. Was the door lock different than the ignition and glove box? Thanks

Hitch, you forgot to say what year, but that's a good pic on your profile. My 66 had two keys, one, the octogon one fit the ignition and doors, the pear shaped one fit everything else, even the locking gas cap if yours came with one.(mine did). Earlier cars like my 62 only had one key that fit everything. Not sure about 63-4 cars.

I bought and installed a complete set from one of the vendors and all (doors, glove box, ignition) use the same ignition key which is a duplicate of the original.
Through 1964, one key worked everything; from '65-up, one key worked the ignition and doors, and the other one worked the glove box and spare tire lock.
Before you toss out a bunch of perfectly good locks and keys, that may be original to your car, I would consult with Pete Lindahl in New Mexico. pclindahl@comcast.net
He will walk you through troubleshooting what you have, repair what needs fixing, and sell you only what you might have to replace, all NOS GM and fairly priced. Your 66 should have one key for Ign and Doors, and one key for Glovebox and Spare Tire tub lock. He will provide you with knockouts too if you are interested. Pete is the man to help you on the whole key/lock enchilada.
Dave - Before you send your stuff across the country, check with your local locksmiths. They can clean and lube your locks and make keys if you need them. I had a local guy re-key my replaced trunk lock to match my original door/ignition key on the 60. Make sure he knows the old GM cylinders and can get the GM blanks.

I don't get it. my 64 coupe was an early built car (NOV 9 1963) it has 2 different keys that work all the locks as you stated are 65-up. I bought my 64 in 71 with the the origonal keys and locks. my 64 still has it's origonal keys and locks.

Yeah Mark, I'm going to try to find someone local to fix me up. The ignition and doors are different and the drivers side lock doesn't work at all.

Someone messed with it between '64 and '71; it left St. Louis with all locks keyed alike and two identical octagon-head keys.
Before you blame the locks for not working, you must look at the door latch mechanisms. I took my door latch mech apart and the crud and and hard grease will keep the locks from working properly.
Clean and degrease , check latch and lock rods first. Take out locks and clean them and work them out of the door.
Pete is great at getting you new keys if you have the lock and can read the numbers on the case.
Clean first
