Default cold lash setting 097

Hello, 3 part question
1.is there a way to set the lash (cold) on the 097 so that it will be at the proper(recomended) when warm?
2. what would the lash settings be ?
3.and is the old school way to start at top dead center number 1 position and set the appropriate intakes and exhaust then rotate 360 and adjust the rest?
I checked the archives and could find information on the 30-30 but not the 097
Regards , Xiaoman

ps....i just checked a motors manual from 63 and it also lists .008 intake and .018 exhaust from 58-62 but special hp engines use .018 E->012 I

i would not worry about a lash difference from cold to hot on an iron headed engine....

Yes, testing done at the factory never showed much more than .001" difference due to the similar expansion coefficients of the valve train parts with respect to the cast iron heads. Aluminum heads would be another story, but not as much as you might think.

interesting am i right in assuming the heel is at 0 degrees tdc or is it different. if so how would you find the correct location? also seems as though there is little difference in the settings cold to hot.

I have messed with this cam for years. I've set them hot, cold, .008/.018, .012/.018 and everything in between.

I now set them at .012/.018 cold. Works fine for me. If you tighten up the intakes to .008, you'll lose a little bottom end, especially in a 265-283 but pick back up a little on the top end. You can even feel the difference in a 327.

I don't think there's any difference in performance between setting them hot or cold. I can't tell the difference. You gotta' ask yourself, how hot is hot? Hot at idle or hot as wide open, sustained throttle?

One of the main things in adjusting valves is to make sure your adjusting nuts are good and tight on the studs so they don't back off. If they've been off/on the rocker studs a few times, it may be you need new ones.

I adjust one cylinder at a time. Others do it differently.

You may want to adjust one bank at a time cold and then start the engine and check your work while it's idling. This may help until you gain experience.

Hello,
what about tdc at no. 1 and setting half the valves at once and rotating 360 to set the others...does it mater with solids or does it only apply to hydralics?

If you read my attachment it tells you exactly how to do the lash with that 2-step method (which I use). It works perfectly on the Duntov 097 cam and solid lifters...I wouldn't use it on a 30-30 cam.

There is NO lash on hydraulics as they are pre-loaded so of course this method doesn't work on them...
