Default Headlight switch ****

I finally got my dash put back in yesterday. Not as bad as I thought it would be, a few sore fingers and a cut or two, but worth having a restored cluster/dash.
I have run into one problem and that is with putting the light switch **** back in the headlight switch. You are suppose to push the ****, that has about a 3 inch rod, into the switch, turn it to the left and push. It should lock in the rod and if you want to take out just push the little spring on the bottom.
I have tried, put can't get the ****/rod to lock into the switch. I must be doing something wrong, but just can't figure it out. Any suggestions?

I typically put just a tiny dab of silicone grease on the "ramp" at the end of the shaft to help it slide through the lock. Also, sometimes you need to push the little button up to help it in a bit.

I'll try the silicone grease. I did try to push the button, but it still didn't help. Can I damage the switch by pushing the **** in to hard?

Well, it depends on what too hard is.... <grin> Sometimes they can be a bit stubborn but I have found that with the grease, push the **** and rotate back and forth while pushing fairly firmly, AND hold the button up they will snap in. At least I have never NOT been able to get one it that way.

Here is a trick that usually works if you haven't already tried it...sometimes the rod doesn't seat far enough when you are installing it.

Remove the switch and install the rod with the switch in your hand then PULL the rod all the way out to the full headlights ON position; then push the release button and carefully pull the switch out keeping the switch set to the full headlights on position.

Reinstall the switch into the dash and install the rod as you normally would and it should seat properly now.

really simple here....sometimes you have to support and push on the back of the switch with one hand and push in the rod with the other, you do not have to turn the **** to make it latch but you do have to hold your tongue on the left side of your mouth....

I finally got it in, I think it was putting my tongue on the left side that did it. Thanks guys for all the info. I appreciate the help.

I was just swearing over this same problem today, until I found this thread. Your suggestion is "right on": remove the switch from the instrument panel. pull the switch to full "ON" position. then reinstall the switch. Insert the ****/ rod gently until you feel it contacting the sliding mechanism inside . THEN push the button underneath the switch assembly while gently sliding the **** further. you will hear/feel a "click". release the button , and it's engaged. doesn't require any brute force or grease. (at least in my case) Thanks!
