Default Borgeson Power Steering Conversion Help

In the midst of installing the Borgeson PS Conversion on my '66 vert. Couple of problems:
1. I cut the steering shaft just over an inch, and still had to move the steering column inwards about 1-2 inches. I really didn't want to move it in that much but had no choice. Only about 3/4" of spline was left for the rag joint.

2. The ps pulley sent with the kit won't work It hits the front frame. The ps pump seems to really stick out far (forwards). I think I'm going to have to get some sort of pulley that has a large (2"?) offset that will bring it back, away from the frame, also to line up with the crank pulley.

I'm not much of a mechanic, but wanted to tackle this project. Not too bad so far, other than the above 2 points. Anyone else run into these problems?

Thanks.

Gary

I believe you need the 327 high perf cast iron pulley, single groove. That's what I used on my install. Isn't the pulley that comes with the kit a 2 groove? The cast iron pulley has the offset needed so as not to need the p/s add on pulley on the crank.

yes, the one that came with the kit is a 2 groove. Where would I find the cast pulley with the offset?

Do you have telescopic steering? I just went thru a similar situation installing my Borgeson. I have a 63 but I have 65/66 tele steering. No one really answered my threads but from doing a lot of "research" it appears to me that the splines on the 65/66 tele steering shaft are much shorter then other c2 steering shafts. You really can only cut off about 3/4" - 1" before you are going to have problems. Then you do what you are doing and move the whole column farther into the car. Borgeson should probably address this as a side note in their literature because not all c2 steering shafts are the same.

bmcnitt:
Yes, my '66 is telescoping. Thanks for that response. It does make me feel better that I didn't do anything "wrong".

On my standard steering I cut about 62mm off end. This left about 20 to 25mm of spline which is just enough to engage fully with the coupling supplied by Borgeson. Sounds like the Tele column has alot less spline to play with. On Std column there is more than 75mm of spline length.
Even cutting off the maximum amount possible, the whole column was still back 5 or 10mm into car. In the end I had the shaft cut 10mm, machined and TIG welded, 50mm above spline, by a highly experienced guy who does alot of race car & aircraft welding & machining. Very nice job and column is now back to where it should be.

OK, newest problem.
I purchased the correct power steering pump pulley and a 3 groove - 7 3/8" crank pulley, which seems to be the standard. Now, the crank pulley is too big - it hits the water pump pulley, which is a 7" pulley. What gives? Its never as simple as you think its going to be. Is this what I need?

Sounds like you have pulleys from something else on the car.
Mine measure about 165mm Dia (about 6 1/2 of those inches things).
I can fit my little finger between the WP pulley and crank Pulley
BTW the WP pulley is also about 6 1/2
