Default Puzzled about Engine Decoding on '64

CE 2204 is stamped on the pad Front/Passenger side.
3970010 is casting number on Rear/Driver side.
My friend told me it was a 4 bolt, but he didn't know anything else.

Does CE stand for Crate Engine or Replacement Engine?

I am have trouble detemining exactly what year/cubic inches/horsepower this means.

This Forum is an awesome place to learn more about this fantastic hobby.

Yes, CE denotes a factory replacement engine or over the counter motor. You can determine the date of manufacture from the cast date on the back of the block.

That casting number came out in 1968 and was available in 327 and 350 Cu. in. displacements and the vast majority (probably 90%(?) were 2 bolt, not 4. Last year of manufacture was 1979, in the interim GM made millions of them.

The CE might mean a warranty replacement engine or an over the counter GM spare engine. There's no known method of decoding the numbers any further.

Default Thanks guys!

Thanks Pilot Dan and Mike!

I like your Silver '64 Coupe, Dan!
My neighbor has a '56 on blocks in his basement, an unfinished primed project car. It hasn't been touched for the past 20 or 30 years. What a waste. I offered to buy it and finish it, but he refuses!!

*** Can you tell from the 3970010 casting number on Rear/Driver side if this is a 327, 350 or another cubic inch displacement?

The casting number you have there translates to a Chevy 350 built between 69-79. You will have to check the casting date on the block for the exact date of production. As far as horsepower, it could be either a 185 Low horse or a High horse 370 HP (more likely). You should be able to confirm by checking the casting numbers on the heads. The early ones had the double hump or camel humps in the front to signify high horsepower. Hope this helps you. Pilot Dan

Hate to disagree with Dan but the engine could be either displacement and could have spent it's life in any GM vehicle car, truck, van- you name it before finding it's way into your Corvette.. No real way of saying it's this or that without a teardown.

"Chevrolet By The Numbers" lists 3956618 as the 327 block for 69, and also 350, and 302. It lists 3970010 as 69-75 350, and 69 302. No mention of 327 for the 010 block. Most likely, it is a 350, but as stated earlier, it will require measuring the stroke.

Default Saw "Camel Humps" on heads

Thanks again guys for your help on this.

Saw the "Camel Humps" on heads. Does this indicate High Horsepower of 375?

I took the valve covers off and saw this casting number on the head:
3782461.

The 461 heads were used from '61-'66, machined either for 1.94/1.50 or for 2.02/1.60 valves; no way to tell which setup you have without pulling the heads and measuring the valves.
