Default 65 headlight harness question

When preparing to install new wire harness this morning making sure I knew what goes were with photos of the old and labels to the new harness, I discovered two wires broken off their connection points on the black plastic rectangular piece attached to the headlight motors only on the passanger side. As best I can tell from a catalog diagram, it is a limit switch but that could be just a bad guess?
I have had (cross my fingers and knock on wood) no problem with the headlights rotating. Can someone explain what that piece does and how I can have things working properly for 10 years without one of these two switches not working?

yes it's the limit switch.

The 2 broken wires are for your limit switch. The second picture shows the motor mount and ground wire missing. They should be attached to the motor at the empty bolt hole.

Thanks for clarifying what it is. Now what the heck is it suposed to do since I have not had it hooked up for as long as I have owned the car. The driver side is connected but the passanger side is not?

The switch turns off the red flashing "lights" warning on your dash that tells you your lights are on but not fully open.

One point of clarification.

As Jim (1snake) notes, they trigger the "LAMPS" alarm on your dash when your headlights are on, but both buckets are not yet fully open.

However they are not true limit switches, in they play no role at all in controlling how far open or closed your headlight buckets will go. Some think these "limit switches" must turn off the headlight motor when it gets full open or full closed, but in reality the only thing that stops the motor from trying to rotate, is the mechanical limiter and the person holding the switch in the "on" position.

Jeff is correct however all vendors list them as limit switches, hence the confusion.

Agreed. I wanted to make the distinction, because we're getting a lot of first time mid-year owners on the forum lately. These new enthusiasts may not know that holding the headlight bucket switch in an "on" position for too long, can cause the headlight motor to trash the gears. I didn't want the limit switch phraseology to inadvertently create an opportunity for future threads titled "My headlight motor turns buy I just hear grinding!"

Thanks guys. Appreciate the clarification. I just got back to the garage and back on my back getting ready to pull the old harness. Discovered some bubba work on the front turn signal light connections. Just never seems to surprise me. .... but then if I didn't love what I was doing why bother keeping it? So tomorrow is another day.

We're working on 45+ year old cars. Some of them have had a few Bubba's "improving" things over the years. Fortunately, correct parts and info. are in great supply and it's easy to fix anything. Remember, this is supposed to be fun.

Bubba just loves to mess with Corvette wiring. A new headlight harness and extensions, is a good investment. Take your time and you will be pleased with the results.

Stupid question here, does anyone have a picture of where all of the harness connectors plug into on the headlights and headlight motors.... ??

I'm trying to figure out if my connections are right or not (and what the two? blue connectors are).

Any help appreciated.

When you install the new switches, don't tighten wrong. They can be as brittle as your old ones.

Default Headlight extention harness

Im installing a forward harness in my 65 that I purchased from LectricLimited and they say you need the extension harness
I can't figure out how to plug them in. I see no matching connectors on the forward harness.
Any help would be great. Pictures would be even greater !!!
Thanks, Mark
