How much "flex" should I be getting in the gap between the door and quarter? I noticed a paint chip last year that came from the door hitting. It doesn't hit when the car is sitting still. Could that happen from rough roads? Thanks, Rick
I will have to check when I get it out of storage--hopefully soon. I have never done anything with the jambs since I have had it--30 years.
Thanks, Rick
What is the purpose of the wedges? Door alignment, or body flex on the convertables? Something else???
To minimize the effects of cowl shake/body flex on a convertible; in effect, they create a solid beam from the upper hinge to the upper rear of the door to the lock pillar when the door is closed. That's why they're tapered for closing clearance and shimmed. They're also used on the sides of the top compartment lid, for the same reason.
From the day I took delivery of my 63 swc, I was surprised to find the uneven spaces between door and body! These range from touching to 1/4 plus inch spaces. This probably the result of not matching (or trying too) on door installation. There is a rise in the body of at least 1/4 inch over door fit at one area. Some owners make the mistake of trying to fit body to door perfectly (or close) by adding (or subtracting) body filler and fibreglas. Remembeer itcame from the factory as less than perfect!
