62 wheels
Did the standard steel wheels come with the rubber hose or whatever it was in the gaps to prevent small rocks, etc. in the hubcap? Or did owners just come up with the idea?
John F
That was introduced for the hubcaps that had no slots in them. I think 58 was the last year for that?
Edit: Checking Noland Adam's 53-62 restoration guide, indicates that this was introduced in 1958, and then terminated for 59 with the introduction of the 10 slots around the perimeter of the 59 wheel cover.
Actually, the rubber hose seals between the spider and the rim started in mid-1955, and continued through 1958.
:o Well that's what I get for using a 30 year old reference! Seems like yesterday I got that book for a high school graduation gift from the previous owners of my 62. Hard to believe it is old enough to be out of date.
It's still a good reference - check out the '56-'57 section, page 135, second paragraph, under "Wheels".
I'll be darned, yep there it is. I was thinking it started in 58 so when I checked page 240 and found the text, and he didn't say something like "continued to install" I thought 58 was the first year.
Thanks Guys! Try ing the dogdish look now for awhile.
John F
Well, you know me, I personally prefer the plain-jane, HD or factory hi-perf look.
Cars with all the glitz and glitter and gigonda wagon wheels are just flash which say "looky at me". I'd rather have the performance image instead of the glitzy image (and of course, the power to go with it ).
I like your dogdish look.
Now, if you REALLY, REALLY want to have the factory big dog look, get one of these!
