Default The Stingray Prototype

The High Museum here in Atlanta has an exhibit with 18 of the most stunning vehicles on the planet - The Allure of the Automobile. For me the biggest draw was Bill Mitchell's '59 Stringray prototype. I snapped some shots with the Blackberry that are terrible quality, but I thought I would share anyway. If you are driving distance from Atlanta, it's worth the trip. And bring a camera, they allow photos!

1935 Duesenberg

1934 Packard

1937 Mercedes

1961 Aston

wow, very cool. You can see some of the design elements that made it to production.

The car looks really good ( maybe the lights?) or it's been restored since the last time I saw it in person at the Tech Center. It was looking pretty lumpy and dull a few years ago.

The car was amazing, must've had a recent freshening up.

I think the tickets were under $20.

It was completely restored by/at GM Design (Styling) about five years ago.

That Aston is one of the super-rare DB4GT Zagatos, shorter than standard with a lightweight Italian-made body.

That is correct. It's worth mentioning that none of these cars are "typical" examples of their marque. Every car was a limited edition or a special build and had a unique history of racing or celebrity ownership, etc.

This is the complete list of cars:

• 1933 Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow
• 1934 Packard Twelve Runabout Speedster, formerly owned by Clark Gable
• 1935 Duesenberg JN Roadster, formerly owned by Clark Gable
• 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster
• 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante Coupe
• 1937 Delage D8-120S, Surbaisse, formerly owned by Louis Delage
• 1937 Hispano-Suiza H-6C "Xenia" Coupe
• 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C2900B Touring Berlinetta
• 1938/39 Porsche Type 64 Coupe replica
• 1953 Porsche 550 Le Mans/La Carrera Panamerica Coupe
• 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SLR (W 196-S)
• 1957 Jaguar XKSS Roadster, formerly owned by Steve McQueen
• 1961 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato
• 1961 Ferrari 250 Short-Wheelbase Berlinetta, "SEFAC Hot Rod"
• 1948 Tucker Model 48 Torpedo
• 1954 Dodge Firearrow III Concept Coupe
• 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham
• 1959 Chevrolet Corvette "Bill Mitchell" Stingray Prototype

Some of the early pictures were in my '63 to '67 book.

There are also a few on my web site.

I have pictures of Bill Mitchell on the streets of his neighborhood. He used to drive it back and forth to work.

Mitchell also had a penchant for exotic Italian cafe-racer motorcycles - Laverda, MV Agusta, Ducati, etc., and he rode them to work occasionally, wearing custom-made Bates leathers. He was relatively short and on the "portly" side, and did NOT look good in tightly-fitted leathers (think blue sausage).
