Just a quick one. Some time back I received an email of a chemical concoctions of removing rusty bolts and nuts.
The winner was Auto Trans Fluid & Acetone. Now what I was wanting to know how can I keep this 50 -50 mix together in a spray application. Surely a plastic spray bottle of this mix wouldn't last in the plastic bottle. An oil can might work but no good if spraying is required. Can anyone suggest a way of keeping the mix in a spray applicator. Or is there a metal spray applicator on the market..... Stewy
You may be over thinking this. ATF comes in a plastic bottle. I purchased a plastic bottle of acetone at a craft store, so unless the mixture of the 2 will combind to destroy plastic then you should have no problem with a plastic spray bottle. I would give it a try and see what happens
Yeah all the Acetone over here is metal tin. I could be wrong but mine are tin. I will try a mix and see how it turns out. I hate mixing different chemicals together I always think it will go bang..... I'll try it ! Stewy
I read that too and was pretty amazed....I wouldn't mind having some of that Acetone/ATF solution in a spray bottle laying around. (Sooner or later I'm gonna have to tackle the rusty bolts on my boat trailer). Pls let us know if your method of storage works.
I use a metal, refillable container that you pressurize with compressed air. I use this for brake fluid but it should work for the evil concoction you're mixing up.

Acetone is also one of the components in lacquer thinner....and is good at removing lacquer and other paints. Use with care around your car so that you don't have unintended consequences
Kroil is/appears to be safer to use around the car. But it is somewhat difficult to find and is a bit $$.
I bought a couple extra spray bottles from Captain Al - the ones used to spray his paint remover. I keep lacquer thinner in one, and use it to spray on items I want to clean, as opposed to dumping some on a rag (and spilling the rest all over the place). In a regular spray bottle, Lacquer thinner breaks down the rubber seal (and sometimes the plastic) in a couple hours. The Captain Al bottle has lasted 3 years so far......

Good point and I don't want any auto trans being left to soak into the fibre glass.......Stewy
A product I have heard about for years but rarely found at retail outlets is Kroil. I've used a lot of penetrating oils over the years but none I've tried works as well or as fast as Kroil.

I read a rating chart a while back and Liquid Wrench was rated quite high. I can't remember if it was Kroil or PB Plaster that was higher. I've had good luck with Liquid Wrench and just got some Kroil but haven't used it yet.
There is a portable sprayer made by an outfit called Preval. The sprayer has a glass bottle about the size orf a large baby food jar and a disposable aerosol type cartridge that propels the mixture to be sprayed. These can be bought a model shops and some hobby stores.
I am sure that this would work, the only question would be the length of time that the propellant cartridge would keep its charge.........
