I developed a squeeking/squeeling noise from what sounds to be coming from the lower part of the engine. I plan on removing all the belts to elininate the bolt on components. Has anyone had experience with failing main engine bearings? Could this possible be the source? Please say no..........

could be as simple as a bad belt or a squeaky front seal on the harm. bal.......
If it were the harmonic balancer, would taking off the belts relieve enough pressure to surpress the noise? or not necessarily.
take of the belts and listen for the squeal....if it's still there then it's not the belts and could be the front seal or something else....belt tension should have nothing to do with a squeaky seal....
After you've pulled the belts off and eliminated that as a source of the noise, check to be sure you're air vent to the crankcase is not plugged. If you have a PCV valve hooked up and no intake air, the air will be pulled across the front and rear oil seals making a squeaking noise. That, by the way is about the only possible mechanism that can cause a squeak in an oil seal. If all that fails, you may have a rod bearing spinning in the big end of a rod. My motor did that just before the most recent rebuild.
Unless you just like to punish yourself and get dirty, take a spray bottle with water in it and spray on your belts/pullies and see if the noise changes or goes away. The water will lube the belts long enough to get rid of a squeak for a short period of time.
Tonights the night.........I will remove the belts.........since this will also eliminate bad bearings in the water pump, alternator and power steering unit.

A spun rod bearing will make a screeching/squealing noise. Even a chirping noise. Pull the dip stick and take a look for metallic filings.
Does your engine do this all the time? Hot? Cold? Come on gradually? Change with rpm?
Add this one to the odd but true category.....I took the rubber hose listening device to the oil pan, and determined he noise was defenitely lower rear part of the engine. squeeling/clicking. Pulled the bellhousing inspection plate off to make sure there was no debris interfering with the flywheel. Turns out the plate itself had split above the starter nose and somehow sprung back enough to come in contact with the flywheel. Cheap fix...Im back in business!! thanks all.........

Ha, finally someone else had that problem, now I know I'm not crazy!

Glad you got it resolved.
LOT'S of people have had that problem but when I've heard the noise it makes, it's usually a scraping or clicking sound. Later service flywheel shields have a flange incorporated into it to latch around the oil pan (I think) to prevent this contact.
Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
