engine id please
A friend is starting to build a rod and was given an unknown chevy block.The casting # is 3782870 and the date stamp ? is l 15 1.Could this be a 1961 283 WITH ? HP

According to the Corvette Black Book, the block is a 327. The casting number was used on all 1962-1964 327 'vettes and on some in 1965. I'm sure others can help further.

All 62-65 small blocks I believe have a 3782870 casting number so this a definite 327 however the l 15 1 seems to me like maybe September 15, 1961 block casting date,..r u sure that maybe the l symbol isn't a 1 number as sometimes the scoring of these casting date numbers weren't very well done. If this first digit is a 1 then this would mean the engine was a probable early build for the '62 production year. Does he have the heads that go with this block and R there any numbers on the head front stamp pad,..passenger side? Hope this helps,.. :chevy
