Good morning everyone. I am installing my water pump tomorrow. I went to NAPA and they recommended permatex "high tack" gasket sealer. They said it would hold well and not completely dry out. I thought that because of the 62 motor mount bracket having a tendency to move this could be good. Please let me know what you guys think. What should I use on the threads of the bolts? Thank you Joe

That should work fine. I use Permatex #2 on the bolt threads - several go into the water jacket. The installation is simplified enormously by using 3/8"-16 studs for the top bolts to "hang" the sandwich of parts on without smearing off the sealer, installing the bottom pair of bolts, then remove the studs and replace them with bolts.

For my own selfish interests.....is the earlier 283ci install the same ??
Joe, What John Z said is spot on, BUT I always use Grade 8 bolts, washers and split ring lock washers on my water pumps. There will be less likelihood of a bolt snapping off due to too much torque during installation. I always coat my bolts and gaskets with Permatex Red silicone sealant. This has always worked leak free for me. Good luck.
Thank you very much for all of the great info. I bought grade 8 bolts but was told that when I go to get it judged it was not original and they would take off points for Top Flight. I used chasers to clean out the threads and pretty much have followed the advise given. My only question is; being I want to get it judged which bolts do I use, the originals or the grade 8? Joe

The judging deduction for incorrect bolts is one point (out of 4500); I wouldn't worry about it.

John I found a permatex 2 form a gasket, non-hardening, sellador. Is this the one you are referring to? Thank you. Joe
I guess I am old fashioned, still find that Indian gasket cement (shellac) used on my Napa pump and bolts and original 47 year Bolts. Worked well no leaks, no sheared bolts. Regards,Abe G

And you can't beat the smell for bringing back memories of working on engines 30+ years ago (at least for me).
When I was at Autozone buying the #2 I saw a little bottle of this stuff called Indian gasket cement with the head of an Indian on it. I wondered what the heck is this stuff used for? Now I know! Thanks for all the input. I guess it's whatever has worked for each one in the past. Joe
