I just finally got my dad's '62 vet after an almost 3yr restoration and am looking for information on how to figure what classification. (Stock vs modified) it belongs in if I show it/ have it judged. Overall concept was to have it be as stock as possible, but it was in horrible condition and many of the orignal parts were not on it. Modifications include a 350 ramjet engine with automatic fuel injection, an alternator (instead of generator), disc brakes with radial tires, stainless exhaust, and a correct radio with a mp3 hidden hook-up (is in "glove compartment" by elbow). The guy who restored it for me thinks should be listed as stock..and I tried looking up the rules, but can't find them...only see things that say " 3 or less major modifications or minor modifications. What's considered major and minor and do they need to be listed up front, or will the judges figure it out for themselves. While I really just want to take the car out to be enjoyed, I don't want to upset anybody by being incorrect about the car and be disqualified for beibg in the wrong group. Any help's appreciated!
Each show organization will likely have their own rules for classifying your car, but from what you describe it would likely go into some form of modified or moderate stock class.
Do you have a specific show circuit in mind?
When you reference 3 or less modifications, those often are things the judges can easily spot.
In my own experience, I've always found the cars to be re-classified if necessary, on show-day, if someone registered for the wrong class by mistake.
I wouldn't worry about being kicked out of a show or disqualified, but do be prepared to be reclassified if you guess wrong.
The main thing is to be proud of your efforts and enjoy the show experience, but not to get too hung up on it. If for example you end up in a modified class because you have 4 mods, you could end up competing against highly modified cars that could eat your lunch because of all the points they'll get for the extra mods.
When I showed my cars I always told myself "At the end of the day I get to drive this cool car home, that's better than most of the spectators can say".
If it looks stock you may get away with a stock sports class if you don't open the hood. But that's a catch 22 as if the hood is not opened you would not get points for under hood ....But if you open the hood, a Ram Jet is not stock. So mild custom sports is the next step if your bumped from stock....However lawn shows are not to picky and pure Vette shows may bring questions from others your competing with....they will point out to the Judges changes not consistent with stock Vettes...especially those in the same year group...The 3 changes will just move it to a higher Sports class and if you have enough changes up to the 'Radical sports class......The ISCA shows and I would think the NCRS shows would be the stricter Judging shows but lawn shows are probably anything goes shows.....and those allowing the entrants to be the Judges are probably the worst, too subjective..... ...and good luck
Thanks guys! That helps. Yes, the car locks stock until you open the hood (kinda of hard to miss a big engine).. And that was the point of the project, trying to stay true to the year. But it was in such bad shape, changes were inevitable- and I got a better "driver" that I can enjoy. I found out fast how serious some corvette people can get and don't want to have to deal with those kind of issues when I'm only in it to get the car out of the garage and see all the other cars too. No great ambitions, so probably mostly lawn shows....I know its modified, just not MODIFIED- and the instructions/rules got confusing when I started to look at possile shows.
Btw: I'm sure the engine, alternator, and disc brakes are considered major modifications. But what about the stainless exhaust, radial tires, correct radio with hidden ipod hook up, and the fuel injection (its part of the ramjet..so does that count as one big mod or 2). I think that's really all on the car that's not stock
most shows i've gone to have all corvettes in one class. when they have stock and mod. classes they tell me what class they want me in. sometimes stock. sometimes mod.. i always go home a WINNER because i get to drive her home and put her in my garage!!!!!!! ENJOY!!!!!!!!
