Default My introduction

I finally found my C2 and purchased it Saturday, a 65 vert. It's a NOM but has original trans. I've been reading and trying to educate myself as much as I can here, but I don't know how to read what motor(hp) it's supposed to have? It has a 63 (3959512) replacement motor currently.

Can you educate a noob some?

If your original motor is gone, not possible to tell what it originally had. There are some clues that might help narrow it down like the redline on your tach....some 65 experts will chime in.

If the motor (not sure about that cast number you listed) hasnt been rebuilt, you could tell what it came out of by looking at the stamp on the stamp pad. Post that number (usually a date with a two letter code) and someone will be able to tell you what it came out of.

Congratulations and welcome to the club. This site has tons of valuable info.

Check your Tach redline, and the max PSI on your oil pressure gauge. This can narrow it down to either the SHP motors or the lower HP motors. Assuming the gauges are stock etc.

Mine had what was possibly the original dist. so I used the tag number on that as well. I concluded that mine is most likely the L76 340 SHP motor. I did not have the core support for the fulie.

Welcome Bang11. Go out with a flash light and write down every number with it's location on the current motor. Assuming it was originally a small block, they may have kept the intake and carb from the original, so get those numbers as well. That can help tell what horsepower it may have come with, as well as tach redline, and other stuff members will tell you. Pictures always help when you play Dick Tracy. Enjoy the journey.

Looks like the 512 was a warranty replacement block. Any other stampings or info on the block?

Tach actually redlines at 5300, oil pressure 60 max.

She's red, supposed to be silver on silver but I want her Nassau blue

The motor is not in the car, the chassis has been completely restored and she could use new paint.

The intake and the heads match up but I'm not sure to what motor.

Edit: It has domed pistons, I was told I can't run pump gas with the heads it has with it.

Welcome! and congratulations.

Not True! With Chevy cams, correct tuning, many here run on pump gas.

Welcome aboard and congrats on your 65. With a 5300 redline and 60 max oil pressure your car was most probably a 300 hp unless the cluster was changed. The heads would be 63-66 300 hp. 3866922 intake is 62-65 327 cast iron. (check your second 8 to see if it's a 6.)

The 922 intake in 65 is a 250HP engine. 300HP was 3844459 and the 350 was aluminum. Distributor number for a 250HP and 300HP is the same (1111076) so that won't help much. Carb number may help. If it's a 4 speed, then the base motor will have a Carter 3697S while the 300HP would have a Carter 3721SB.

Carter puts their numbers on the base by the mounting hole. I have annotated a picture but it's in red and hard to see. For the life of me could not change its color. The carb shown is one from a 300HP.

K9 3721SB so it's 300hp my intake is in fact 3868922, there's no way to code the intake and heads to the car, correct?

Thanks Geek, is your car Nassau blue?

Is this possible by using thicker head gaskets? How much does cam selection come into play? This is very interesting to me as I thought with the current configuration of my motor (11:1 pistons and 461 heads) it wouldn't work on pump gas. Any thread on this anyone can't point me to?
