Default Idle question

My engine idles at 8500 when cold but after a few miles of driving it idles up around 1100. Is this normal, and if not, how do I correct it? Its a 67 427/435. Thanks.

Sounds like an issue with your choke/fast idle cam. It's probably sort of normal for the engine to speed up just a tad after it runs for a minuet or so, just because the engine is starting to warm up. It really should go to fast idle speed as soon as you start it. (1500 or so) as it warms up, it might increase 50-100 RPM, just because the fuel is burning better as the engine starts to get a little heat. As soon as the choke releases the fast idle cam the cam shold release as soon as you depress the throttle enough to disengage it. Your choke may not be setting properly or may not be releasing the fast idle cam. Take the air cleaner off and actuate the throttle linkage once. The choke ought to set, (close) and the fast idle cam ought to swing in under the adjusting screw. Start the engine and verify that the choke opens within a couple of minuets (unless it's very cold, then it will take a couple of minuets longer). Once the choke opens, the fast idle cam should release as soon as you hit the throttle . As to the choke, I try to set it as lean as possible. As long as the engine will start and run on its own until it gets warm, that's rich enough. A too rich choke runs a real rich mixture in your engine and causes all sorts of problems from fouled plugs to scored rings.
