I have a 67 427 and recently I found the car battery drained for no reason. I drove the car all week and all of a suuden it doesn't start.
I recently replaced the dash harness and I have checked all the fuses, the glove box light, voltage regulator and the alternator and they all show good.
I just put in a new battery yesterday and as I started the car the ammeter showed a full charged battery but a few seconds later I could see the needle on the ammeter moving irratically and moving towards the negative zone. There is something that draining the battery at a fast pace.
Check all of your connections first. My regulator plug comes loose sometimes. Also double check your battery ground connection. The quick drop sounds like a connection loss. I am sure more knowledgable folks will chime in.

Based on the erratic needle movement, I'd also suspect a voltage regulator problem, or a failed diode in the alternator.
Make sure the terminals at both ends of both battery cables are clean, shiny, and tight, and the same with the screw-terminal wire connections at the horn relay (disconnect the battery ground cable while cleaning/checking connections). Could also be the battery cables themselves (too small, corroded inside the jacket, etc.).
