Its not a corvette piece. My guess it was used for hanging the frame and they forgot to remove it????? But just a guess.
Yep, that was my guess too, thanks for seconding the idea. But after thinking about it a while, there are plenty of places to hook onto without adding a bracket. Really no reason to weld another just for an acid bath.

I started digging thru before photos of the chassis and found the bracket was there before it went to Duntov. I'm sure they just assumed it was there for a reason too. If it was meant to be a temporary bracket then they sure went to a lot of trouble to fabricate and position. Looks like it was on the chassis a long time.
Did the car ever have side exhaust. Maybe it's a "bubba" bracket for stablizing the side pipe at the curve. Any evidence of one on the other side? Dennis
If it is above the splash shield, it could be that someone fabed in a coolant catch can, a alarm siren, or just about any piece of added on equiptment.......
