I have a 1963 FI with a 37 amp alternator that only has to run an engine, radio and MSD 6. At the end of 1963 when A/c came out, they offered a 55 amp I believe. Since I might have to rebuild, is it to my benefit to upgrade to a 55 Amp or am I just wasting my money. Also if I upgrade, will I have to add larger wire from the Alternator and would I have to change out the regulator to hangle the additional amps..............thanks......

I don't think you have to change any wiring for a 55 amp alternator or the VR. If I was rebuilding it, I would go to 55 amp in case you ever add an electric fan, stereo, etc.
I was just wondering the same thing. Thinking of swapping my 37 amp to a 60 amp in my 67 base motor coupe. At night when at idle the lights dim and the directional signals slow down. Will this help, and is it just a simple alternator swap and nothing else?

from my research on Mad Electronics.........our style alternator can be retroffited to higher amps for max output but the idle amps will stay the same and you will have the same problem........but there is good news........it can be modified to give more amps at idle with the right internal parts. I just don't know how to do it and anyone who can do it for me. This is why I am still reseaching. I will be contacting a rebuilder in the AM to find out if he can do it. The new styles like the
S-10 models will do it but then they are have internal regulators...
The only thing that changes to up the amp output is the stator and rotor.
Most rebuilders today don't even bother with the low amp stators and rotors they just use the higher amp parts in all the units.
If you are still using an external regulator just switch the rotor and stator and it will be undetectable.
You can purchase any 55-65 amp unit and just put the parts into your unit. I believe the Lester number is 7122. Have the store bench check the new/rebuilt unit before you purchase it.
