If it popped back when the engine was cold, I MIGHT suspect the carb. Hot, probably not. Especially since you say the car runs great except for that.
Just had my 3810 rebuilt by Oles carb in San Bruno, took John Zs advice on how to adjust the air fuel mixture, runs like a champ, and my hat goes off to Oles Carb for doing a wonderful job on the rebuild, that does sound like a timing issue. Ditch
Thanks John, as always, perfect answer with a picture.
One more question. What are the circles on the tops of the fuel bowls? Mine are epoxied shut and look like little shiney hockey pucks compared to yours.

What do those circles do?
Those are metal plugs in the holes where the adjustable needle/seats went in other carbs that had them; they're held in place by rolling over the rim of the edge of the hole in the pot-metal bowl all the way around the metal plug if the rebuilder/restorer really knows what he's doing (first thing a judge looks for on a 3810 or 3814).
Thanks John. Not sure what to do with mine. I don't know if it is worth a few hundred dollars to get mine "un-epoxy-ed" for just 4 judging points or not.
I'll see if I can pick up those points elsewhere and then see how bad I need them.
