So I have a '64 vert with bias ply tires on in currently. They are at least 10 years old, but have some tread left. I have put about 15 miles on them because I realize they aren't that safe.
I am switching to radials this week and have read that the radial will not fit into my spare tire keeper. I don't want to replace the spare tire keeper--I think my $$ can be better used elsewhere. I am thinking about keeping on of the old bias ply's to use as a spare so it will fit (or buying a new one perhaps since they are so old).
What are the adverse effects of, say getting a flat, then running the bias ply with the three radials? I realize if they are not the same size, it will cause drift and perhaps breaking problems, but we are talking emergency situations only. Will it cause differential problems, etc?
Not an expert but a few miles won't hurt a thing IMHO.
My spare is a bias ply from a 66 Nova.
Think about those little donut spares on newer cars, not a problem right?
I would like to know the number of people on this board in this day and age with cell phones who would even think about changing a spair tire on there classic car.

Depends on where I am. Mine doesn't go on long road excursions. Not yet anyhow. So a flatbed wrecker is always around the corner.
If I had to leave the car alone for ANY time,I would change the tire myself.

I couldn't tell you if my spare is a bias or radial ply tire. I havn't looked at it for maybe ten years. It was one of the fronts when I got him in 1976!!!!
Regardless, I'd still change it out and get it home rather than park it.

True, but lets just say its Christmas Day, it falls on a Sunday, and I'm in Eastern Kentucky/Appalachia, with no one to tow me.
If you can't change your own tire, do you have your sister in the car to help you shift too? Wouldn't want to get carpal tunnel..
If you use radials here is a suggestion - I have both a plug kit and an inflator goo bottle in the well in my car. I have a spare from a 2000 Z28 as an emergency fixer if the tire shreds as well.
Why?
If you change the tire and the radial does not fit in the tub where will it have to go? Hope your "Significant Other" is not wearing white clothes... and that you have hearing protection for the rest of the drive

If it's flat, it'll fit in the spare tire tub. If it's a rear tire, put one of the fronts on the rear and put the spare on the front so you don't fry the Posi unit (if the spare is a different size than the road tires).
