Hello everyone, You folks have been really helpful, so I'm back for more. Since I am working on an older car than I usually do, getting into some things I havn't had to do before, i can really use the help.
This one would seem simple, but evidently not for me. I'm installing a new ignition switch in to the '56 and I inserted the barrel lock assembly into the switch body, now I can't get it out. Does anyone know how to remove the barrel from the sw body?
Typically there's a small access hole on the lock face. You insert the key, turn it full left, insert a paperclip into the small hole and push, then turn the key left a bit more and withdraw the cylinder.
My 62 vette was like that, I'm pretty sure my 56 Oldsmobile was as well, so I suspect your 56 vette will be similar.

My '64 is the same as well. Don't know how long they used that same part.
Thanks Guys, it was just as you said. A paper clip and a little tiny hole and wella, it comes right out. Never had to remove an ignition barrel before.
So here's the next question. back in that era, the key slot had a chrome piece( i'll call it a bezel) shrouding the key when it was in the switch. Back in the day if you chose to remove the key without locking the lock, but left it in the off position, you could start the car by just turning this bezel to the start position. Must have been a simpler time back then.
Anyway, I can't keep this bezel on the switch. For one thing, when I push it onto the cylinder it binds the switch and makes it hard to turn. then is pops off. Any ideas. (the switch does work without it).
