Default 66 Power Window Problem

My driver side power window has been acting up. When the car sits in the sun and gets hot the window moves slow or not at all. It appeared to be the switch. I changed out the switch everything worked fine. Today same problem except this time the switch burned up, smoke etc. I unplugged the power and now the switch is obviously melted, the switch lever/paddle just flops back and forth.

Again faulty switch? Or bad motor with too much resistance thus burned switch?

This time I'm going to add an inline fuse. Anyone know what amp fuse should be used, the circuit breaker is obviously not enough.

Thanks

Greg

Sounds like a rebuild is in the future for you. The resistance could be coming from the motor, the tracks or the rollers or a poor wire connection on the motor. Since it's the driverside, the brushes on the motor may be worn out or the grease my be drying up. If it were grease drying up, it should get better in the sun. I have rebuilt both P/W 's and replaced the rollers. I found the article on the forum "Anatomy of a midyear door" to be invaluable. There are a few vendors on the forum that rebuild the motors. I had mine done by Corvette Specialties of Maryland. I know they moved to Palm Springs, CA. I don't know if they are accepting work yet. Good luck. Jerry

I pulled the switch and the heat buildup was at the switch connector and one of the toggle switch legs(inside the switch housing). It appears that the switch was of poor quality and burned under load. Really sucks the switch is 2 weeks old maybe used 10 times. I purchased it from long island corvette. I'll contact them tomorrow.

By passing the switch the windows operate properly.

Anyone having trouble with replacement window switches?

I would also look at the PW harness where it goes thru the conduit. I had a similar problem and it was simply because the insulation had worn and was making contact to ground.

yep, I am in the process of adjusting my windows, the windows work sometimes and ;up and maybe down at at time. I was holding the switch and felt it getting hot. I thought it was me over
using the switch. i did not pay a lot of attentioon to it b/c I was more worried about getting my windows adjusted. I dont remember who I bought the switch from. My car has been in the m aking for a long time and as I saw a deal on parts I bought them.
Well, I tried a second switch after all of that and one side did not work. Go figure.
Another day another dollar. Smile
Goood Luck,
George
