Default setting odometer

I'm going to try to repair/replace the odometer and trip meter. Does the new odometer have to read 000000 or can I choose what mileage to set it at? I looked at the part and can't see how to move the numbers.

I had the one on my 62 apart years ago, I had to remove the numbers from the spool and rearrange them to reflect the mileage of my car (instead of the 00000 that the rebuilder set them to).

Not sure how a 63 would work (this is on your 63?)

Some states may find it illegal to change yours to 00000.

I haven't tried removing the numbers. Sounds like it might work. The State is one of the reasons that I want to plug in a mileage figure. When I bought the car, the odometer worked for about an hour and a half. Since then, I've been making up a number each year when the car is inspected. Thanks for your help.
