I believe 891s were used from 57-61.

Don't forget the 1110879

The 908 I think was the first tach drive dizzy. I'd also like to know when the generator driven mechanical tachs were started...

Corvettes had mechanical tachometers right from the beginning, in 1953, and continuing through 1974.

The first tach drive distributors appeared in 1953 also. Generator driven tachs didn't appear until the '55 V8s came along.

When did they go back to distributor driven tachs? I assume it was because they went to alternators but I don't remember when that was.

In 1962 all tachs were distributor driven.

The tach driven generators were also the drive for the power steering units used in the full size passenger cars....

Correct, but I believe they were slightly different and won't work as a tach drive. (I could be wrong though)

Beginning in '57 on high horsepower fuel injected engines. Low HP FI engines continued to use generator-operated tach drives.

Yes, they work fine with a tach drive gearbox attached; the extended armature shaft was the same for power steering or a tach drive.
